WHY CATS LOVE BOXES

Cats and boxes is a tale as old as time but we as humans are still mystified by this strange and adorable obsession of our feline friends. There have been various scientific studies, some of which are still going on but our kitty cats are proving quite hard to read. However, here’s what we know so far that explains this strange affiliation.

If I Fits I Sits

Put cats and a snug container together you will have the best photo opportunity and some hilarious pictures to show for it. This shows that it is not only the box, they will sit in anything that is enclosed as they are cryptic animals that love enclosed spaces. Enclosed spaces offer a twofold advantage; comfort and security. They can hide, pounce and hunt their prey from the enclosed space allowing them the comfort of home. The natural behavior of wild cats also shows that they like to take their hunt back to the place of familiarity. Similar instincts can be observed in domesticated cats as well.

The warmth of a Womb

Corrugated cardboard boxes are great insulators and retain the heat providing a womb-like comfort. A cat's normal body temperature can range from 38.05 to 39.16 degree Celsius, which is higher than humans. That means that they're most comfortable in settings anywhere from 30 to 36 degrees. Humans keep their homes around 22.22 degrees, so cardboard boxes provide the cozy comfort for your cat that we humans crave as well. The curled up position of sitting inside a box also helps retain body heat making it the ideal setting for your furry friend to snooze in.

Scratching & Chewing

If you have ever owned a cat or even observed one the scratching and clawing behavior is very evident. Wildcats use it as a means of defense mechanism but domesticated cats exhibit this behavior as well, simply because it's their inherent nature. And boxes are perfect for scratching and chewing. Imagine a hammock of chocolate that you can bite out of whenever you feel like it. This is exactly how a box feels to a cat. Just sit in the thing that you can chew and scratch on without getting yelled at by your owner. A perfectly happy place that you can sink its teeth into!

Curiosity killed the Cat

There is a reason this horrifying idiom has the reference of a cat and no other animal. Cats are incredibly curious creatures and the entrance of a box in a familiar environment triggers their instinct and them out to explore it. It will be a matter of moments before they realize they love it and then you will see your cat comically adjusted in it until another one of these playthings arrives.

Big Cats Love Boxes Too

The peculiar behavior becomes even more adorable when the cat playfully enjoying a box is a vicious jungle cat otherwise a symbol of fear and strength. Here is an adorable video that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
